November 7, 2003, Newsletter Issue #14: Antioxidants in Vitamins Helps Prevent Heart Disease

Tip of the Week

Studies show that vitamin C helps prevent hypertension and atherosclerosis, as well as reducing cholesterol and increasing HDL, or "good," cholesterol.

Studies on vitamin E show a 40% reduction in risk of heart disease in both women and men who had high intakes of vitamin E (mostly from supplements).

B vitamins are also essential in lowering your risk of heart disease, especially B6, B12, and folic acid. These vitamins reduce excess homocysteine in the blood. B vitamins help your body reduce water retention and eliminate fat cells from your body. By reducing fat, you are helping reduce your cholesterol levels which can adhere to the walls of the arteries of your heart.

Calcium, chromium, and selenium have also been shown to help lower your risk of heart disease.
