September 28, 2007, Newsletter Issue #121: Build Strong Bones

Tip of the Week

The word osteoporosis means “porous bones”. It is a condition in which bones become thin, weak, and prone to fractures. Bone loss is a consequence of aging. Women are particularly at risk for developing this and it is a serious condition.

Women´s bones start out thinner than men´s, and adverse changes in the levels of estrogens, the female sex hormone, after menopause appear to accelerate bone loss. Some bone loss is normal and doesn´t mean that osteoporosis is inevitable, or even uncontrollable.

After the age of about 50, women can lose up to 10 percent of the outer layers of hard bone and 25 percent of softer, deeper bone. It sets in gradually over years or even decades. For this reason it is more easily preventable then it is treatable.

There are some good strategies to keep in mind including physical activity, such as weight training, walking or resistance training, but the key, most important one would have to be your diet.
